MAUREEN MAUK
STANDARDS AND PRACTICES CONSULTANT
What the Bleep do we know? Enough to tell you this -- Maureen literally has her finger on the button of all media regulatory policy and its cultural implications with regard to the North American commercial and television space. Maureen embarked on her journey into television ethics with the Broadcast Standards and Practices division at FOX Broadcasting as a Standards & Practices executive. There, she spent many hours negotiating with Gordon Ramsay, Simon Cowell, and the Fox Animation team regarding FCC regulations, V-chip ratings and protecting the network and its affiliates from being fined for their antics. Do you know how many times Gordon can say 'bollock' on camera? No? Well, neither do we, but Maureen does, and that is her superpower.
After a decade with Fox, Maureen transitioned to children's programming at Mattel, where she oversaw the children's regulatory needs for both in-house productions and influencer-based digital content and programming. Whether Hot Wheels, DC Superheroes, Monster High, or Barbie, Maureen ensured the advertisements passed muster with the FTC while meeting all COPPA regulations and rigorous ethical standards for marketing to children. Maureen Mauk recently completed her PhD in Communication, specifically Media & Cultural Studies, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying content regulation, effects of digital content mediation on parents, and the ethics and responsibility surrounding U.S. television and platformized media and content policies.
As we say around here, it takes a salty sailor's mouth to anticipate and censor our public airwaves. So, it’s a good thing Maureen was raised by a sailor because she’s pretty much heard it all! If you want to test her knowledge of just what the FCC will flag these days, then give us a ring, and you can play the "Can we say this on TV" game with Maureen.
Before Maureen worked as a S&P executive, she cut her teeth working in production on The Office, Brothers and Sisters, Scrubs, and Malcolm in the Middle.
Maureen is a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences & The Society of Cinema and Media Studies.
